Greenhorn's Top
“The mountains have rules. They are harsh rules, but they are there, and if you keep to them you are safe.” - WALTER BONATTI |
Greenhorn's Top is an easy peak from the fundamentals book. It is the first peak in the game, and introduces new climbers to swinging and basic movement mechanics. It serves as the game's basic tutorial and poses little challenge beyond learning game mechanics. It also introduces a recurring character: Porter.
About Peak
Greenhorn's Top is a squat, but rather large boulder that stands at 6,07m (21.9ft) and lies in a moderately wooded field. Other peaks can be seen in the distance, though none seem to be any existing entries within the game. Greenhorn's Top introduces the player to the first mechanic of the game - climbing. Porter will be sitting at the top of the peak the first time the map is loaded. In the event that the player falls 3 times, Porter will offer his assistance. At this time, there is no known real-world counterpart to Greenhorn's Top.
Strategy
Greenhorn's Top offers an introduction to the base movement mechanics of Peaks of Yore - primarily Climbing and Jumping. The player uses W A S D to move the player character forward (up when scaling walls), back (down when scaling walls), left, and right - respectively. Spacebar is used to jump. Finally, the player uses LMB (Left Mouse Button) to control the left arm and RMB (Right Mouse Button) to control the right arm.
Upon immediately encountering the first hold at the bottom-left of the path, the player may note that they cannot grab onto the hold without jumping. Once the player jumps, using RMB/LMB while hovering over the hold will lock the player character in place, allowing them to dangle without fear of falling.
The player is faced with the objective of determining how much force should be exerted to reach the next hold. In this instance, the distance between holds is minimal enough that no extended movement or jumps are required to ascend the peak. Using LMB and RMB, the player can swing from hold-to-hold using their arms and grab onto each consecutive hold.
At the peak, which is represented by a wide hold at the edge of the peak, simply hold spacebar to complete the peak and gain access to the stamp book.
